I was born in India but for the past 12 years, Chi-town has been my home. Going to a suburban high school, somehow 80% of my friends turned out to be brown… go figure… So naturally, I had to join SASA! From dancing all night practicing for the show, to just hanging out with great friends, I’ve really enjoyed being part of it all. I also enjoy playing basketball, watching movies, and listening to bunch of different kinds of music. So far SASA has been full of awesome memories and I look forward to even more great times!

The SASA Cultural Show was my first introduction to SASA and the awesome people that make this diverse RSO so special! From dancing onstage in a lungi to a Tamil song and saying the most obnoxious lines ever, SASA has given me some of my best moments at UChi. And that store of memories can only grow!

Get excited guys, SASA is going to have the BEST-EST year ever!

I was born in Delhi-6, but went to school in Singaara Chennai, despite having ancestral roots in Athippotta, Kerala. This might explain why I’m a fan of the Bachchan khaandaan, enjoy Suresh Gopi movies, but ultimately have Rajnikanth’s mug plastered above my bed. Everybody I meet asks me why I didn’t sell my soul to the IIT entrance test during high school. It’s supposed to be a very ‘South Indian thing’ to do that, it seems. Nobody, myself included, knows the answer. Maybe it’s all because of something mundane, like my preference of Madras filter coffee over IQ Topperâ„¢ memory plus pills with breakfast. I secretly think, though cannot explain why, it has something to do with my liking large tusker elephants.

Year: Class of 2012! (oh yeah!)
Major: Biology and English (Subject to immense and spontaneous change).
Hometown: Calcutta, India/ New Providence, NJ

Arshiya hates writing blurbs about herself. She gets excited very easily though…so anything about tennis, dancing, traveling, Jane Austen, carjhocolate, her failure with technology…will do the trick. She is very excited about SASA too!! YAY!

I am American born and bred but I have had the good fortune of summer annual trips to Delhi ever since I was born. My parents are both from India. I love being brown, Russell Peters, LOUD bhangra music and any food that is terrificly unhealthy. I enjoy frisbee, walks on the lake shore, golf and skiing. I am super pumped for being internal relations chair for SASA and I’m pretty sure we are going to have a wicked good time this year.

Balle balle!

Before UofC all I knew about India was where it was located (barely). Then in my first year an awesome girl introduced me to Bollywood and I became crazy for it! Since then I have been in several South Asian RSOs such as Hindi Film Society, SASA, and Sapthak. While I’m still a physicist applying to grad schools for next year and vice-president of the Society of Physics Students, SASA rules my life and I’m happier for it.

Although I moved around a lot during my childhood, Karachi is the only place I will ever consider home. SASA brings to UChicago all that I miss – awesome south asian people, color and music, and the incredible diversity. I am thrilled to be a part of such an amazing board and hope that this year turns out to be an unforgettable one.

I was born in Vizag, India, and miss everything about it-the beach, the hills, the mirchi bajji, and most importantly, the brilliant dynamic of Indian traffic. I’m currently a pre-med student at the university and want to pursue community service in the medical field. My other activities include playing tennis, speaking Telugu, jamming to R&B, and reppin’ the 309.

I had just gotten out of basketball practice my sophomore year when I was walking by the auditorium to get dinner (I attended a boarding school). I heard strange music and decided to take a look. Someone was doing Bharatanatyam on stage. This is awesome, I thought. I wanted to do that too. So I started Indian dancing. Then I went to college. Now I am in SASA and I still try to Indian dance but sadly I still don’t know Chinese fan dance or ribbon dance
